Defeated Sanity

1. Hello, Wolfgang and thanks for replying this interview! How are you at the moment?
Hi my friend! I am very busy with our new live program, but I´m fine!

2. Defeated Sanity started as a project in '94. Who came with the idea (especially with the band-name idea, and what does it mean?) and what can you remember from that period?
Our drummer Lille came up with the idea of the band name. Defeated Sanity stands for the whole stupidity in this shit system - we´re fighting against it with our music, like every DeathMetal band should do!

3. Along the years you released 3 demos. Please tell us some things on each of them and their meaning to the band's history and progression.
Each demo we did was a step forward coming to the point we arrived now! In the beginning of the band we had a long experimental phase but was very important to find the way to real, brutal, authentic Death Metal!

4. After that there was the time for two splits, one for Grodhaisn Rec. and the other for Merciless Rec. How do you see those splits now?
Merciless Rec. is an old school label, we also like that, but we needed a label which supports modern style Brutal Death. Finally I can say it was a good time with Pigi (Grodhaisn) and Volker (Merciless). These guys helped us a lot!

5. Now you're on Grindethic Records. Is it a short-term deal as well, or this might be considered your first "real" label? How did the contract came to life, meaning how did you get in touch with each other?
Jon from Grindethic contacted us 3 years ago but we had no material at that time. When we recorded "Prelude To The Tragedy" we sent it out to him and he was very impressed by the stuff.
Yes, you can say it´s our first real label and we hope the work with him will be going on for longer time!

6. Now let's talk about your debut album, "Prelude to the Tragedy". Why is it called like that? The prelude is a lyrical one or a musical one as well? Who writes the lyrics and what are they talking about? I saw they are somehow out of the ordinary death metal area...
Called it musical or lyrical, it´s both at the same time. The lyrics are about genetical science (on Prelude) as you can see on the Cover. The most lyrics were written by the old singer Kelly, but the ideas came from the whole band. It´s all about the "Defeat Of Sanity". You´re right, we´re out of the ordinary DeathMetal area!

7. Now about your musical style, your label compares you with Gorgasm, Suffocation and Deeds Of Flesh. Are you agreeing with that matter? How would you characterize it yourselves and what are you bringing new to the scene, or better why a metalhead should buy your album?
I agree when people say we stay in the tradition of Suffocation, which for me was the first new school band. Today you have bands like Disgorge, Brodequin and Devourment, that are also in that tradition! Metalheads should buy our Album, because we try to keep the old tradition of songs full of dark atmosphere, complex songwriting and pushing forward, what stands for real good Death Metal today!

8. To be honest, to me it seems that at the middle of your album there's a kind of turning point where the music becomes much more complex and catchy. That's my oppinion but I want to find your poin of view on that.
I don´t think so. "Liquifying Cerebral Hemispheres", the first song, is the most complex song on the album. Catchy it becomes, in my opinion, at the end of "Remnants...".

9. There's a link between the cover-artwork and the lyrical content of the album? By the way, who made the cover? What about your logo?
As I already told you, the cover artwork describes the song "Prelude To The Tragedy", which is about genetical technic. The cover is done by Thomas Westphal from Necromaniac Zine. He also made the first logo, but we have another one now, which is done by Jon Zig and Ray. You can see it on our website www.defeated-sanity.com

10. And now let's pass on to the technical stuff of the record. please tell us about the Soundforge Studios, about the time you spent recording in it and about its equipment. Who is Andreas Hilbert and how was it working with him?
The owners of the Soundforge Studio are Andreas Hilbert from Golem and Kai Mertens from Harmony Dies. We needed about two weeks for recording, mixing and mastering. The work with Andreas was okay, but he is not really into the Defeated stuff and that´s a problem for us to find a studio, that really knows what to do for this kind of Death Metal. You ask about the equipment? No toilet and no heater in January! haha! But Andi and Kai found a better place now in Berlin!

11. Since the album is out for some time you should know by now what reactions it provoked. Are you content with the promotion Grindethic made for you?
We have good conditions on Grindethic. We can be really satitsfied. Jon is a great guy, you know he stays to his word, and he brings the stuff to all Death Metal heads worldwide, which is very important for us.

12. When it comes to gigs, I saw you supported extreme metal gods as Suffocation, Kataklysm, Krisiun or Voivod, among other big death/grind names. Which one was your best show and why? How many metalheads come to your shows usually?
I liked most our show on the Rotterdam Deathfest with Gorgasm, Vomit Remnants, Severe Torture, etc... which had a really good atmosphere and we met good people. You can see an video track from that show on our website soon! Unfortunately we need "big" bands, so that many people are coming. We´re not so famous this time, be we will change this for sure....

13. Germany has a great brutal metal scene and I enjoy a lot of your bands, but what would you recommend us from the new wave of metal bands? By the way, what are you listening to at home?
I can recommend Resection (band of the new Brodequin drummer) and Profanity. I´m listening to only the best bands: Brodequin, Devourment, Disgorge and a very good newer band is Gutrot.

14. What did Defeated Sanity have been doing this year? Maybe there are some new tracks over and ready to be recorded? There will be any big changes on your new album?
One of the highlights was Rotterdam Deathfest of course, it was the last gig with singer Kelly and bassist Tino (Thank you for everything, guys!!!). Now we have to change the line up completely, we already have a second guitarist (Christian from Hamburg) and singer (Jens from Berlin) and we are still watching for a bassplayer. We made five new songs this year (one of them is "Hideously...." you can listen on MP3). Also a three track Demo is already done. It will come out (maybe on Grindethic?) this year, and a label from Thailand will bring out a split MC with these three tracks together with Detrimentum from the UK, which is a band with Jon from Gorerotted/Grindethic on drums. On the new songs you can see big changes of Defeated Sanity. Extremely guttural voice and much more brutality.

15. Thanks for your kindness and hope to talk again soon. Good luck with the band!
Okay, hello to all Metalheads in Romania, I´m sure we'll see you there
